Piastri accepts the debt for racing-ending crash on ‘messy’ weekend | Racer

Oscar Piastri says he should have known better than the grip level on the opening round of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on his way to the barriers at bend 5.

Piastri completed a weekend of non -characteristic errors by jumping the start and falling to the back of the field at the first turn. In an attempt to cut his way back to the points, he locked in turn 5 and plowed in the wall.

The double mistakes came out of qualifying after he crashed in Q3 for a while, leaving him for a season of ninth on the schedule.

The racing-ending crash was committed while trying to pass Esteban Ocon around the outside of the left-handed bend. He judged his braking point wrong, perhaps as a result of Nico Hulkenberg for him too deep in the corner to brake – but while the German just got through, Piastri traveled way too fast to correct his mistake.

“I think it ultimately misjudges the handle level,” he said. “Probably much of that is out of dirty air, but I know better than to expect the lack of grip.

“Just a wrong estimate of the lights, I think I’m trying to anticipate too much. A simple mistake and then went into anti-stall and it went downhill from there.

“I certainly do not blame it for something else. They were two simple mistakes on my behalf that caused today.”

The litany of non -characteristic mistakes should have made Piaastri vulnerable to him, but teammate and most important title rival Lando Norris did not succeed in capitalizing, qualifying and finished seventh to reduce his shortage with only six points, so that it was brought on 25 points.

The limited damage, however, was of limited comfort for Piastri, who no longer had to explain why his other clean season record was so completely broken in a single round.

“There has been nothing else [about this weekend]”He said.” It depends on how you want to look at it, but for me, if I felt that I was in a completely different headroom, then it is easier to blame it and also a problem to remedy, but this weekend felt like every other weekend.

“Unfortunately, there have been far too many mistakes from start to finish. Every session has been messy, so just trying to clean up is the most important thing for the future.

“I think it is rare that I have so many implementation errors, so I am very focused on placing that behind me. I would worry much more if these mistakes were because I tried to make time or do things like that. I think they have been clearly expensive mistakes, but things that can be whole, very easy.”

The Australian also took a lot of conviction that he was quickly in Baku, but could not demonstrate it.

“You will never feel great after a weekend like this, but in the end I felt that the pace was still good this weekend,” he said. “I just try to bounce back from this weekend and set the best versions I can do, and I know that if I come back to where I know I can be, I will be more than okay. That is what I will concentrate on my energy.”
