A relaxed philosopher is expected to enjoy the small field in Caulfield

Transforming a thorough speed demon like Philosopher into a relaxed galloper has been a tough task for trainer Enver Jusufovic and his staff.

When Philosopher entered Jusufovic’s stable after starting his career with the Anthony and Sam Freedman stable, the son of Zoustar knew only one way.

It was speed, speed, speed and sometimes the philosopher couldn’t harness that ability to run through the bridle.

It was the tighter corners, such as Mornington, Moonee Valley and Cranbourne, where Philosopher was seen at his best.

But as Philosopher has grown older he has learned to relax and tone down the speed, allowing the gelding to record his biggest victory in the Listed WJ Adams Stakes (1000m) at Sandown in January.

Philosopher has gone winless in seven starts since winning at Sandown and Jusufovic now believes the sprinter is better off at a course like Sandown or Flemington.

But Jusufovic will hope Philosopher is back in the right frame of mind against six opponents on Saturday when he takes part in the Sportsbet More Places Handicap (1000m).

Philosopher will start last in Ballarat on December 6 and Jusufovic blames the wet track for the sprinter’s demise.

“There were a few downgrades, and he has shown in the past that when it is changeable or loose underfoot, he is not a confident horse,” Jusufovic said.

“He has a big action, and he just finds it awkward.”

Jusufovic said the philosopher’s recent work suggests the gelding is doing well and can bounce back.

“I’m happy with his work and he came back a little more relaxed this time,” Jusufovic said.

“But I think everything should pretty much go well for him on the day.

“If the pace is right and he can stay a few lengths clear of them, rather than being right on speed, that gives him a chance to finish.

“There have been a lot of excuses in a lot of his starts lately, but you would like to see him produce again on race day.

“My preference these days is to take him to a big circuit like Sandown and Flemington, rather than the tight Caulfield circuit, especially the Heath circuit, but I still expect him to drive well.”
