Peter Crouch’s time at Liverpool ended sooner than he would have liked and it was all because of one player who bonded with Steven Gerrard.
It was truly an honor for Peter Crouch to make the move to Liverpool in 2005. The giant striker had just finished bottom of the Premier League with Southampton, but was still able to join the club that had just been crowned champions of Europe.
Crouch made 64 top-flight appearances during his first two seasons at Liverpool, but he would only make 21 in his third season at the club.
This was due to the arrival of Fernando Torres from Ateltico Madrid. The Spanish striker was an instant success for Liverpool, scoring 33 goals in 46 games in all competitions.
Crouch told The Managers Podcast: “Three and a half I think [the length of time he was at Liverpool]. Yes, it was Torres who unfortunately paid for that. He came in and had a connection with Stevie and it was like watching my old girlfriend.
Torres was a level above Crouch in his goalscoring prowess and his arrival marked the beginning of the end for the Englishman at Anfield.
However, Torres left three years after Crouch joined Portsmouth, leaving the footballer-turned-pundit questioning whether he had made the right decision to leave Liverpool.
“He [Torres] came in and I was like, one thing that’s messed with me, I think over the years, was he finally left and I was looking at players that were playing up front there, [Andriy] Voronin and [David] Ngog, no disrespect to them, but I felt I was better than them.
Crouch subsequently appeared in every Premier League match Portsmouth played the season after leaving Liverpool. The striker then joined Tottenham Hotspur, where he remained a key player.
However, he has declared Liverpool the greatest club he has ever played for and had he stayed, he might have found his way back into the first team.
He added: “And I felt that if I had stayed I might have had a longer career at the club because I don’t feel like I’ve ever gone to a bigger club than Liverpool.”
Torres could also regret leaving the Reds. He had success at Chelsea and even won the Champions League in 2012.
On a personal level, however, it wasn’t the best move for Torres as he scored just 45 times in 172 appearances.
