EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – Perfidious crown (Tall dark stranger) didn’t exactly make a ripple in the water a year ago, when the then 2-year-old was dealing with ankle problems during a season in which she went 0-for-6 with three third-place finishes.
But so far in her three-year campaign, everything has gone well for Tony Alagna’s intern.
“As a daughter of Treacherous Reign and Tall Dark Stranger from the first crop, we had high expectations,” says Alagna. “But she just had the normal bone reconstruction of her hind ankles from a two-year-old and we just had to wait for her. She finally got everything sorted out and I can see her being an open mare in the future.”
During Friday night’s competition at The Meadowlands, a mid-range conditioned event for high-pace fillies and mares, Perfidious Crown easily claimed her second straight victory on the mile oval. Her resume said she could run with this group after competing in both Pennsylvania’s Stallion Series and the James Lynch earlier this season.
PERFIDEOUS CROWN REPETITION
The treacherous Crown and driver Anibal Borjas jumped out of the three-hole at the five-eighth and sailed past even-money favorite Wunderkindbluechip on the turn before hitting the wire to run an easy 1¾-length winner in 1:52. Twin B Sunkissed came second and Laurie Lee third.
“She feels very good now,” Borjas said. “I think she likes it here [at The Meadowlands]. We think she is a nice foal. My plan was to leave and leave for a bit [A Few Choice Words] go after I saw her coming [at the quarter]. Then I wanted to see if anyone would come before I left [at the five-eighths]. My plan was to be the first to cross the last corner.
Perfidious Crown has now collected five wins from just sixteen lifetime starts. Second choice at 7-2 in the betting, she returned $9.20 to win.
A LITTLE MORE: After collecting five winners Thursday night, Brett Beckwith again led the driver colony on Friday, this time with three trips to victory lane. The 22-year-old pilot now has 118 victories on The Big M this year, 28 more than Mark Herschberger, who is second in the rankings. … Tom Cancelliere doubled down to beat the trainers. … All bets on the 14-race card totaled $2,393,877. … Racing resumes Saturday at 6:20 p.m
