The Owls are in the drop zone along with Sheffield United and Oxford United. They are one point behind Blackburn Rovers in 21st place from safety.

Former Leeds United and Rotherham United boss Redfearn has praised Bannan’s influence at Hillsborough, according to a report from the Yorkshire Post: “I saw them play against Wrexham the other day and they played brilliantly. Those kids did well that day and right in the middle of midfield was that jewel, Barry Bannan, that player who guided them. He drove them on.”

“He got the ball, passed it on and let them play. For young players coming through, that’s the perfect role model. If you don’t want to play and don’t get into it, you hear this wrath. He drove them that day and they got a result out of it.”

Bannan, 35, has been a loyal servant to Sheffield Wednesday over the past decade. He has been with the South Yorkshire club since 2015 and has made 458 appearances in all competitions, scoring 37 goals.

Sheffield Wednesday will be relieved to have retained Bannan in the last transfer window. He is a key player for SWFC in the middle of the park and injects valuable experience into their ranks.

The Scot was on the radar of fellow second division sides Middlesbrough and Millwall last summer, according to The star. However, he has since done so has determined his future to his current club.

Bannan was initially loaned out to the Owls before his transfer was later made permanent. He played a key role in their promotion from League One in 2024 under ex-head coach Darren Moore.

The veteran still gets plenty of playing time at Sheffield Wednesday. As Redfearn said, he is someone the younger players will learn from and his influence in the dressing room will be huge.

What next for Sheffield Wednesday?

Sheffield Wednesday have had a difficult start to this term due to off-field issues surrounding controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri. SWFC were defeated 5-0 at home by Coventry City in their final league match before the international break.

The Owls are back in action next weekend with a trip to The Valley to play Charlton Athletic as they look to bounce back and pick up some more points. The Addicks were promoted from League One after beating Leyton Orient in the play-off final at Wembley earlier this year and have since adapted well to the step up to a higher division under Nathan Jones.

Henrik Pedersen was named head coach of Sheffield Wednesday in July following his time in the backroom staff. He was appointed as Danny Rohl’s replacement and has made a positive impression ever since.
