Penguins update: Jeopardy, Will Robinson

Penguins update: Jeopardy, Will Robinson

When I was a kid, that was one of my favorite TV shows (until it got kitschy). Lost in space. Invariably during the course of an episode, The Robot would say “Danger, Will Robinson” to one of the young castmates.

Okay Buker. What does that have to do with hockey in the wider sports world?

Last night I was poking around Natural statistical trick when I made an intriguing discovery. One my colleague refers to, Other Rick.

While the Penguins’ performance has been a bit uneven thus far, we are excelling in certain key metrics, to say the least.

Five-on-five, we rank fifth in the league in expected goals percentage (xGF%) with 54.85, seventh in scoring chances percentage (SCF%) with 53.42, and fourth in high risk odds for percentage (HDCF%) at 59.44!

Looking on an individual basis, I find it fascinating and not the least bit educational which players excel in this important metric and which do not. The results may surprise you.

Taking the lead? Reserve defender Matt Dumawho has had a strong pre-season but has yet to break into the regular line-up, is a perfect 100 percent. Followed by the youngest member of the team, 18 years old Ben Kindelat 75 percent.

Other surprises at the top of the heap include defensemen Connor Clifton (72.73%) and Parker Wotherspoon (64.52%). Third-liners Philip Tomasino (63.64%) and Tommy Novak (63.16%) as well.

Rookie Philip Hallander is also 63.16 percent. At least for me, that’s not a shocker. I think he played very well.

WHO is not near the top of the list? First-line workers Rickard Rakell (48.87%), Bryan Rust (48.15%) and Sidney Crosby (46.67%). Which goes directly against the expected story. The rookie defensive duo Harrison Brunicke (39.29%) and Caleb Jones (35.48%) does not win the dangerous battle either.

Okay, so how about finishing those glorious high-risk opportunities we create? Not a strong point for last season’s peloton (in 19th place).e at 48.37 percent).

We’re tied with the Hurricanes and Maple Leafs for the most dangerous goals in the league, with eight. Percentage-wise, we are tied for seventh with defending cup champions Panthers, while achieving a conversion rate of 66.67 percent.

A very welcome development.

Perhaps also an early tribute to the coach And Muse and its system.
