Tristan Jarry made 21 saves in the win, which management hopes that he will give a boost of confidence on his way to the season. John Gibson made 18 Saves in the loss, but came up with timely rescues to keep the game close.
Summary
In the first three minutes of the opening period, the Red Wings came with a fast start and the first three shots received from the game. However, Jarry has rejected them all, including a few good chances that Detroit could have seen an early lead. In a situation, the penguins are far too familiar, after they had been on the other side, they opened the score on their first shot. After winning a faceoff, Ben Kindel scored his first of the preseason at 3:40 from a perfect pass by Ryan Shea. After he gave up the early goal, Gibson turned around. He came up with a huge salvation on Philip Tomasino to maintain the shortage of Detroit on just one on the way to break. Detroit led in Schoten 7-6.
The penguins got hot to start the second period. They had a few early chances to expand their lead a few times, but Gibson was up to the task. At 4:38 the Penguins found a way to expand their lead. Tommy Novak found the loose puck on the back door and tapped him in the empty just before a 2-0 lead at 4:38. A little over a minute later, Gibson kept the game within reach thanks to a large cross-crease Save on Avery Hayes. During their second Power Play from that period, Patrick Kane had a phenomenal chance to bring the game within one. He remained quiet behind the four Penguins’ defenders who were watching, he received a pass from Low. The puck called the bar and stayed away. Pittsburgh took his 2-0 lead in the last period. Shots in the period were 9-7 for the penguins.
The third period started sloppy for both parties. Neither teams could make successive tape-to-tape passes, resulting in a lot of playing back and forth with few opportunities. The best chance for both teams was just over four minutes in the third period when Kindel received a pass back door. However, Gibson quickly took the net away to keep the game 2-0. With 3:40 to go, the red wings finally broke through. A backhand -pass from near the blue line of Ian Mitchell found the tape of Dominik Shine for the net. Shine pulled the puck to his forehand and hit a vast Jarry to the glove side to bring 2-1. Detroit pulled Gibson with just over three minutes to go, but the Penguins held their lead and took the game 2-1.
De Penguins will play their penultimate presidential match on October 1 at 7 pm when they are heading against the Buffalo Sabres on the road. The red wings will go on the road tomorrow night (September 30) to see the Chicago Blackhawks at 8 p.m.
