Flushing Meadows, New York-with Billie Jean King Cup captain Heidi El Tabakh expects her second child this fall, old Canadian player and coach Marie-Eve Pelletier will lead the team in November.
Canada, which won the BJK cup less than two years ago, lost its qualifying bid in Japan in April without a full team. And so the team now has to go to Monterrey, Mexico in November and play in a “qualifying for the qualifying” week to get the chance to try it again in 2026.
They have host Mexico and Denmark in their swimming pool. That is probably better than Romania and Japan (which they encountered in April). But not by a ton.
Pelletier, 43, played Billie Jean King Cup (then called Fed Cup) from 2002 to 2012.
She certainly deserved the consideration to become the captain as soon as Sylvain Bruneau was gone (and this is not a knock on El Tabakh). She is a former solid pro player, an experienced coach, an experienced BJK Cup competitor and fluent bilingual.
However, since they retire, she has been booked quite well – with two beautiful daughters. And also turn to TV commentary (full disclosure: we are colleagues at TVA Sports).
As a result of the temporary assignment, Pelletier is in New York to help, support the Canadian women and view their games up close.
It does not help that for the third day this week on Thursday, all three of the Canadian women are planned as the court at about the same time.
Also in the house, such as the Canadians clustered on the practical courts on Thursday … Brayden Schnur.
Schnur, who is only 30, broke exactly this week, six years ago in the Top 100 (no. 92).
But he didn’t play in almost two years. From April 2022 until he returned to a $ 25k ITF in Laval in July 2023, he was competitive against a number of very good players (and even some defeated), but his last mach was in October of that year.
Schnur coaches the Canadian Carol Zhao since the Granby ITF tournament this summer.
He was also engaged to the beautiful Addy Townsend, an athlete at Track-and-Field, in June.
