If the Pelicans in New Orleans hope to recover from a disastrous season 2024-25, third-year Swingman Jordan Hawkins has to take a considerable step forward. Hawkins offers an invaluable opportunity to create depth along the circumference, but inconsistency in the past has tempered expectations.
With whispering that Hawkins a bust that will be louder by the season, he has to prove in year three that he can be an important rotary piece for head coach Willie Green.
Hawkins, 23, was selected by the Pelicans at number 14 in general in the NBA design of 2023. It was apparently a high-quality pick after he had helped the Connecticut Huskies to win the NCAA championship 2023 and earned the first team All-Big East subjessions on the way.
Unfortunately, the 38.8 percent of Hawkins from outside the arch as a second -year student at UConn is not entirely translated into the NBA.
Hawkins shot 36.6 percent from outside the arc as a Rookie, but only converted 38.2 percent of his field target attempts. A year later, Hawkins raised his scoring average of 7.8 to 10.8 points per match, but only shot 37.2 percent out of the field and 33.1 percent remotely.
The game is of course more than shooting percentages, but they are an indication for the struggles that Hawkins has to solve if he wants to help New Orleans to realize.

Hawkins is the prototypical scorer that is in an NBA role as a shooter. There is a thick line between those who thrive with volume and the players who can choose their stains, and Hawkins has inevitably encountered early growing pines in his attempts to bridge the gap.
For a pelican team that is already the same with Shot -Makers, the best chance of Hawkins to strengthen his place in rotation will improve the efficiency with which he saves the floor.
The attack of New Orleans is likely to run through franchise cornerstenen Trey Murphy III and Zion Williamson. Murphy, 25, comes from a season in which he had an average of 21.2 points per match .454/.361/.887, and Williamson is a dual all-star that has on average no less than 27.0 points per match.
The door is open to Hawkins to come forward as the third option of the Pelicans on the attack, given the whimsical game that Jordan Poole wants to tackle, but efficiently off-ball play will be essential for his progress.
Third options can receive important shot attempts, but their primary function is to support the two best scoring threats of a team. They will often lead the attack when the top two players are outside the field, with off-ball opportunities that come on their way to keep them in the rhythm in advance.
As soon as they are able to supplement the recommended scorers, the shot attempts of the third option include the tendency – which means that Hawkins first excels in a supporting role if he hopes for more.
Fortunately, there is reason to assume that Hawkins can succeed in this capacity. He shot 38.8 percent on Vang-en-shoot three as a rookie and remained close enough to be too efficient in 2024-25 at 34.6 percent to believe he can turn things around.
If Hawkins realizes his potential and excels like a floor deposit wing, then the pelicans will find it considerably easier to use it in other roles in 2025-26. However, if he struggles for it, minutes can be difficult to come by.
