When Marc Stein reported that the Dallas Mavericks were looking for Olivier-Maxence Prosper, my first thought was how great he would be for the Pelicans.
The schedule of New Orleans is deep, but there is no real point of the bank attacker, something prosperity for them. At the age of 23 he also fits both the timeline of Zion Williamson and the Jeremiah Fears/Derik Queen Timeline.
With O-Max who was drawn up in the first round only two years ago, I assumed that there would be a decent trade market for him, but I think I was wrong.
After they cannot find freer, the Mavericks abandoned hello and signed a two -way agreement with the Memphis Grizzlies. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Grizzlies were one of the many teams who wanted to act earlier in the low season for Prosper. Dallas decided to go further from Prosper to sign Dante Exum.
It is clear that losing Prosper is not the end of the world because he is not an All-Star Caliber player. However, New Orleans needs all the help that it can become defensive, and with an open schedule spot I don’t see why they would not offer him a contract.
His averages last season do not jump off the page, at 3.9 points, 2.4 rebounds and 0.8 assists while playing 11.2 minutes per night. That said, the flashes he has shown as a Swiss arms type wing should have intrigued Joe Dumars.
The loss of Pelicans of Prosper Stings a bit more because he drew a rival division in the Memphis Grizzlies. The Grizzlies already have an abundance of versatile wings and O-Max now contributes.
The Pelicans still have to fill this gap
Because the market for free agency is not improving, New Orleans may have missed a golden opportunity by not signing Prosper. He could have come in and fulfill the greatest need of the Pelicans, which is a point of attack defender of the bank. Instead, the Front Office will have to settle for less intriguing options.
When we look at players who have been left in the free desk that match the role of attack defender, the options are limited. Boys like a aging Torrey Craig, Maxwell Lewis and Cam Reddish are the following best options for the Pelicans. All three of these boys are decent defenders, but may not even be worth a contract if you are New Orleans.
Given the limited options in the free agency, it is perhaps best for the front office of the Pelicans to enter next season without meeting this need and looking at the trade market instead during the season.
