Ruben Amorim guided his side to a much-needed win in front of the home support last weekend as Sunderland were swept to nil by two goals at Old Trafford.
The win helped ease mounting pressure on Amorim’s shoulders after a turbulent start to the season left more questions than answers about his long-term suitability for the role.
A host of names have been linked with replacing United’s head coach if INEOS pulls the trigger in the coming weeks, including managers of current Premier League clubs.
As relayed by MSN NewsUnited legend Paul Scholes has had his say on who he thinks should be Amorim’s successor if he is actually removed from his position.
Newcastle is the man for the job
Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, Scholes named Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe as the ideal man to take over at Old Trafford after doing an excellent job on Tyneside.
“Eddie Howe, Eddie Howe,” Scholes said when the discussion about Amorim’s role came up.
However, despite his support for the Englishman, Scholes added a stipulation to the potential of a deal, citing Howe’s infamous assistant manager Jason Tindall as a drawback. “I’m not sure about his partner (Tindall), but sure about him,” he added.
Tindall’s antics on the sidelines have earned him fame online, with Howe’s right-hand man seemingly consistently craving the spotlight and turning himself into a meme on social media.
Given the spotlight hat that comes with the top job at Old Trafford, Howe may have to think twice about bringing his number two with him should he decide to take on the role in the future.
No change is expected yet
Despite United’s shaky form, victory against Sunderland at the weekend appears to have given Amorim the green light to continue his work in Manchester, but he will be well aware of the need for improvement.
United travel to Anfield after the international break in what could be another fixture for the Portuguese head coach.
A positive Merseyside result could be the catalyst for a return to form, with a heavy defeat likely to lead to stronger calls for a change in the club’s leadership.
INEOS are desperate to stick with their man, but with Amorim living week to week as things stand, the United hierarchy would be remiss if they did not do due diligence on alternative options, and Howe’s name will certainly be in the mix.
