Paul Joyce shares mixed injury news during Liverpool’s training ahead of their match against Real Madrid

There was mixed news on the injury front for Liverpool today ahead of Tuesday night’s Champions League match against Real Madrid.

Although Ryan Gravenberch returned from a sprained ankle this weekend to score in the 2-0 win over Aston Villa, the Reds achieved the result despite the absence of several first-team players, including Alisson Becker and Jeremy Frimpong.

Arne Slot also had to do without Alexander Isak and Curtis Jones on Saturday, after previously indicating that he was ‘99.9% certain’ that they would not play, although it now appears that one of them could return tomorrow against Los Blancos.

Paul Joyce gives Liverpool injury update after Monday training

On Monday afternoon, Paul Joyce went to X with an injury update for Liverpool fans from the Reds’ training in Kirkby earlier today.

The Times journalist reported: ‘Alexander Isak misses Liverpool’s training for Real Madrid. Curtis Jones back at [the] group.’

Good news about Jones, but the frustration over Isak’s injury will continue

The frustration appears to continue for the Swedish striker, who has had a false start to his LFC career since his record-breaking move from Newcastle two months ago.

Having spent his first few weeks building up his fitness at Anfield, he had only just started playing 90-minute games when he was forced off at half-time during the win over Eintracht Frankfurt last month with a groin injury.

The match against Manchester City, which doesn’t take place until next Sunday, will at least give him that little bit more recovery time to be fit for the match at the Etihad Stadium, but his likely absence for tomorrow evening means another missed opportunity for Isak.

Fortunately, the news regarding Jones seems more promising, with the 24-year-old looking set to boost Liverpool’s chances against Real Madrid after today’s training.

Considering how well the midfield trio Gravenberch, Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai played on Saturday, we can imagine that Slot will opt for continuity tomorrow. Still, having our number 17 available would certainly be a welcome boost, especially given how well he has played in recent weeks.

The Reds boss is expected to provide a more detailed update on both Isak and Jones when he speaks to the media at his pre-match press conference later this afternoon.
