Captain of Australia Pat Cummins has provided a positive update on his fitness, suggesting he could return for the second Ashes Test at The Gabba from December 4. Cummins, who is recovering from a lower back injury, missed the opening Test in Perth but has shown encouraging progress during recovery sessions. So let’s take a look at the return of Pat Cummins Ashes.

Cummins is ramping up repairs

The fast bowler revealed he has been undergoing strong bowling sessions in Perth over the past week, gradually recharging to assess his readiness.

“It feels good. I’ve had a few good sessions in Perth this week… It’s on track and going pretty well. I’ve got half a chance for the next game,” Cummins told Kayo Sports.

Cummins added that he would continue training in the coming days before a final decision is made on his participation.

Decision probably closer to match day

Although optimistic, Cummins confirmed his availability would be determined after discussions with the medical team, selectors and support staff.

“There are a few things going on… you want to get a bit of a feel, look at the wicket and make a decision. If I don’t want to play, no one is going to put me in that position.”

He is confident that with a few more sessions and a two-week break before the match, he has a strong chance of taking the field at The Gabba.

Australia lacks significant firepower

Cummins’ potential return would be a big boost for Australia, which already lacks a pace spearhead Josh Hazlewood. Hazlewood has been ruled out of the first two Tests due to a hamstring injury, casting doubt on his presence for the remainder of the five-match series.

In Cummins’ absence, debutant Brendan Doggett featured in the Perth Test and impressed with a five-wicket haul. However, if Cummins is declared fit, Doggett can make way for the returning captain.

Australia Eye Strong response

With England pushing for early momentum in the Ashes, the return of one of the world’s best fast bowlers could play a crucial role in Australia’s campaign as the series shifts to Brisbane – one of their most dominant Test venues.
