American student Tien has played some of his best tennis in the past month. The teenager reached the final in Beijing and the eighth finals in Shanghai. He has never won a title, but he is getting closer. Tien was knocked out in the first round at the US Open, but was unlucky enough to draw Novak Djokovic. He’s already a player to watch, and if he continues this trend, he’ll be a legitimate threat.
Tien and Rolex Paris Masters opponent Andrey Rublev played twice earlier this year, both during the summer hardcourt swing. They split the wins one to one. The Russian has been on a miserable streak of late. After his fourth-round exit at the US Open, he won zero matches in four tournaments played before Paris. Rublev is the highest ranked player and more experienced, but this is a winnable match for Tien.

Jaume Munar vs. (11) Daniil Medvedev
It’s been a wild year for former world number 1 Daniil Medvedev. The Russian’s ranking fell to No. 18, partly due to his shocking performance at the Majors, where he won exactly one match. This fall, however, he turned things around. Thanks to a pair of semi-finals in Beijing and Shanghai and his first title of the year in Almaty earlier this month, he is back at number 13.
Medvedev lost to Jaume Munar at the Miami Masters in March. Munar is playing the kind of consistent tennis that often causes Medvedev problems, but because the veteran’s form has been so poor, few conclusions can be drawn from that encounter. Medvedev now seems to be back in his best, so he should be considered a clear favorite in Tuesday’s showdown.
