Nottingham Panthers defeated Cardiff Devils 3-2 in a thrilling Elite League match at the Motorpoint Arena on Sunday evening.

Panthers led 2-0 but Cardiff scored two goals in the third period before Danny Stewart’s side won the shootout three from three as Carr denied all three of the Devils’ attempts.

Carr started between the pipes with Luca Sheldon as backup. Matt Marcinew returned from injury to replace Nolan Volcan in the lineup, while Jarod Hilderman replaced Cooper Zech.

Alfaro puts Panthers ahead at the first break
Chase Pearson and Hilderman had chances in the opening stages for the Panthers, while at the other end Carr made good saves to deny Riley Brandt and Joey Martin on a powerplay in Cardiff.

Panthers took the lead with a well worked goal when an excellent passing exchange ended with Tim Doherty setting up Matt Alfaro at the back door (13:05).

Marcinew scores on his return
Strong play from Mitch Fossier forced the turnover and Marcinew beat the Devil’s defense before slipping the puck under Christian Stoever (26:51).

Panthers played some great hockey as Brendan Harris shot just wide and Pearson went close, while Carr stood tall to deny Cardiff twice in quick succession from close range.

Josh Tetlow dropped the gloves late in the period and had the better of his fight with Tyson Helgesen.

Devils fight back with two goals in the third period
Stoever put in a top class performance to deny Doherty at the back door and it proved a turning point as the Devils responded moments later to close the gap to one.

Brandon Estes’ shot from the right was tapped past Carr by Ryan Barrow (50:16).

Cardiff equalized with just under two and a half to go when Estes’ shot deflected past Carr off Kohen Olischefski’s skate at the back door (57:32).

Extra time lasted from start to finish as Doherty and Harris shot just wide for the Panthers, while Carr made a big stop on Estes as Cardiff broke two-on-one.

In the shootout, Marcinew, Fossier and Doherty all defeated Stoever, while Carr stood firm on all three Cardiff tries as Panthers secured the extra point.
