A case of tuberculosis is confirmed in a school in Oregon.
State officials confirmed that a person who was infected with an active TB infection was recently present at the Lane Middle School in Southeast Portland.
Officials still have to specify whether the person was a student, staff or faculty and when they were present exactly on the site.
It is believed that the individual may have been contagious between 3 September 2024 to 1 May 2025 and during this time they could have exposed others to tuberculosis.
The close contacts of the patient have been contacted by the local health department and free Blood tests will be offered to the school community in the coming weeks.
Multnomah County Health Officer Dr. Richard Bruno assured people that in most cases informal contact with a person with the diagnosis TB will not lead to infection.
He added: ‘And most people who get infected will never get sick with tuberculosis, especially with current medication regimes.
“Although TB can be distributed in school environments, we expect that someone infected would not be sick yet and can be treated effectively with medication.”

TB is caused by the mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria.
It mainly influences the lungs and can also cause damage to the brain, spinal cord and lymph nodes.
The infection is transferred by the air when infected people cough or speak.
TB kills more people worldwide than any other infectious diseases – about 2 million a year.
More than 80 percent of the cases and deaths are located in low and middle income countries in Southeast Asia, Africa and the Western Pacific Ocean region.
In the US, more than 10,000 Americans were diagnosed with the infection and 565 died in 2024, according to the CDC.
Those with compromised immune system, such as people who live with HIV, malnutrition or diabetes, have a higher risk of getting sick.
TB cases are both worldwide and in the US increasing due to higher international journeys and migration.
In 2024, Oregon reported 87 cases of tuberculosis according to the Oregon Health Authority and the CDC.
This is an increase of 16.7 percent compared to 2023 and the second consecutive year of increase.
Children, the elderly and people with a weak immune system run the most risk of increasing tuberculosis – which leads to permanent pulmonary damage, even after successful treatment.
TB is usually spread by an exchange of bacteria that contain the bacteria through the atmosphere.
Symptoms of active tuberculosis in the lungs usually start gradually and worse in a few weeks and signs may include coughing up blood or mucus, chest pain, pain with breathing or coughing, fever, chills and night sweat.

People can protect themselves against tuberculosis by getting the Bacille Calmette Guérin (BCG) vaccine, but it is generally not on the vaccination schedule in the US due to the low risk of infection.

If it remains untreated, the bacterial infection can damage the lungs and spread to other parts of their bodies, such as the brain, kidneys and spine.
Some people get infected with TB disease germs that live in the body for years without causing illness. This is known as inactive tuberculosis or latent tuberculosis.
Without treatment, however, one in 10 people with inactive tuberculosis will get sick with active TB disease, according to the CDC.
