On Sunday, November 23, the New York Islanders hosted the Seattle Kraken for their first game of the season. This match was very defensive as neither team scored in regulation. Although the match went into overtime, five minutes of 3-on-3 were not enough to determine the winner and the two teams went to a shootout. The Islanders eventually took the 1-0 win above the Kraken.
Summary of the game
The Islanders controlled the puck for most of the game. In the first period they defeated the Kraken 11-4. They continued to outshoot the Kraken in the second period, this time nine shots to Seattle’s six.
In the third period, the Kraken woke up a bit more and made eight shots. However, the Islanders continued to overpower Seattle with eleven shots in the third inning. As it was a relatively defensive 60 minutes, neither team scored. It was now time for 3-on-3 hockey.
Once again, the Islanders overpowered Seattle with three chances on the Kraken’s lone shot. With a total of 34 shots to 19, this match was headed to a shootout.
Frederick Gaudreau was first up for the Kraken and his shot went past David Rittich. Mathew Barzal was next and his shot was saved by Joey Daccord.
Jordan Eberle and Simon Holmstrom were next in line for the Kraken and Islanders, respectively. Both shots were saved, so Seattle was up by one.
Eeli Tolvanen went for the Kraken in the third round and had his shot stopped. It was all up to Bo Horvat. He made his shot and kept the Islanders alive for another round.
In the fourth round, Chandler Stephenson went for the Kraken and was denied by Rittich. Kyle Palmieri went next for the Islanders and his shot won this very low scoring game for the Islanders.

Both teams will be back in action on Wednesday, November 26. The Islanders will host the Boston Bruins, while the Kraken will return home to host the Dallas Stars.
The season series between these two teams concludes on January 21 when the Kraken host the Islanders at Climate Pledge Arena.
