Pakistan ended Day 1 at 313-5 against South Africa in the first Test at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore.
The first advantage on an abrasive surface went to Pakistan, who won the toss and elected to bat first.
The Proteas went with three spinners, a sign of what was expected from the surface.
However, the Proteas made an early breakthrough, with Kagiso Rabada trapping Abdullah Shafique lbw.
That was the only wicket to fall in the first session, as Pakistan went into lunch at 107-1.
Imam-Ul-Haq was on 59* and captain Shan Masood on 44*, both finding it easy to cope with the conditions on the pitch.
Shan brought up his half-century after the break.
South Africa was tighter with the ball, which slowed the run rate, putting the pressure back on the batters.
The pressure eventually paid off with Subrayen trapping Shan lbw after a solid 76 off 147 balls. Pakistan were 163-2.
Pakistan reached 199, Imam on 93 (153 balls), and with Tea not far away, Muthusamy forced him to guide the ball to short leg.
On the next delivery, Saud Shakeel threw the ball back to Muthusamy. Pakistan were now 199-4 when Tea was called.
A great review after Tea from Simon Harmer saw him dismiss crowd favorite Babar Azam (23) without a point being added to the score.
The situation turned in Pakistan’s favor when Muhammad Rizwan and Salman Agha found themselves locked in a partnership of over 100 people.
Salman (52*) and Rizwan (62*) took Pakistan to 313-5.
