The San Diego Padres announced to that righthander Michael King was placed on the 15-day wounded list because of the inflammation of the left knee, with retroactive effect until 11 August. Randy Vasquez has been recalled in the corresponding movement.
The brothers have not yet provided any information about King’s injury or how long they expect it to be out of operation. His IL placement is a remarkable development anyway. De Padres have just passed the Dodgers to take a lead of one game in the National League West. The two clubs open a three-game series against each other in Los Angeles on Friday with the division lead on the line. King was planned to take the ball in the first game, but that will no longer be the case. Maybe Vásquez will take the ball instead. Dylan stopsPlanned to start Saturday, instead could start on Friday and still be on regular rest.
For King it goes further what has already been an injuries with season. He landed on the IL at the end of May because of shoulder inflammation. That injury once seemed fairly harmless, while King woke up and felt any discomfort after he had slept uncomfortably on his shoulder. Later it was revealed that he fluid with his thoracic nerve. It took him more than two months to return to the big league club.
Once he was healthy enough to get back on the hill, his return to the Majors was fast. He only made one rehabilitation start, which was on 3 August. He threw 61 throws over 3 1/3 innings for Triple-a el Paso, making six earned runs possible. The Padres nevertheless activated him from the IL to start the Big League match on Saturday. It cost him 57 litters to withstand two innings against the Red Sox, leaving two earned runs in the trial.
Apparently some knee inflammation appeared between that start and Thursday. There is nothing to indicate that King has an extensive absence, but it is still not a great development for the club. King had a great outbreak with San Diego last year. He threw 173 2/3 innings with a 2.95 earned run average, 27.7% strikeout percentage and 8.7% running speed. His tariff statistics were fairly comparable this year before he landed on the IL.
Ideally, the Padres would have that kind of production in their rotation, not only in the regular season, but also in the play -offs. Maybe King can go on the right track in a few weeks, but this is certainly a setback that they didn’t want.
In the coming weeks, they will start with a rotation that consists of stopping, Yu darvish” Nestor Cortes” Nick Pivetta And maybe Vásquez. Boys like JP Sears” Matt Waldron And Kyle Hart are on an optional assignment. Pivetta has a great year, but stops an ERA of 4.86 about his last ten starts. Darvish and Cortes are both on the IL most of the season. King back to his self 2024 would have made the group much stronger, but he is back on the shelf. Friday’s game in Los Angeles is the first of 13 in a row without an off-day.
It is also not a good development for King Personal, because he is an approaching free agent. After his huge campaign 2024 and in the early parts of this year, he was trending to one of the best free agent starters of the low season 2025-26, with a good shot at a nine-digit deal. His months -long summer absence brought a cloud of uncertainty around him and put a big dent in his earning capacity.
Going back to the Majors could have been the first step to put it on the right track. Almost two months of solid work in the regular season, followed by a few good Postseason-Starts, could have erased the memory of that shoulder injury. That can still happen to a certain extent, but the window is now narrower.
