Have brought back the padres Martín Maldonado on a Minor League contract, reports madfriars. San Diego had designated the lace -in -catcher for assignment after acquiring Freddy Fermin From Kansas City on Deadline Day. They released Maldonado a week later.
Because it has been more than a month ago since the last game campaign of Maldonado, MadFriars adds that he will report to the Arizona complex of the team. San Diego’s Triple-A-partner in El Paso will be in action until 21 September. It is not known whether the Padres intend to allocate Maldonado to El Paso once he is warmed up or will keep him in the complex for the rest of the season.
It is not clear when the deal was signed, but it would be no surprise if this was haamed quietly during the weekend. If the deal were to be completed on 31 August, Maldonado would be eligible for the play -off Roster of San Diego. He would clearly not be a first choice to see some action in October, but that would give them some protection if one of their top two catchers, Fermin or Elias DíazIf an injury suffers.
The Padres still have Luis Campusano On the schedule of 40 men, but he did not start an MLB game behind the plate all year round. San Diego also chose not to remember Campusano with the extra active schedule that is open today, despite the fact that Campusano .329/.436/.603 hits 91 Triple-A competitions. Instead, they continue to wear two rarely used utility -infielders, Will wagner And Mason McCoywhen Jackson Merrill returned from the injured list. It seems clear that De Padres are not interested in trusting Campusano in October if Fermin or Díaz were not available.
Maldonado is at least familiar with the Pitching Staff of San Diego when he is taken into action. His attacking shortcomings are known and this year he hit .204/.245/.327 in 161 record performances. He was also accused of eight successful balls, second most in MLB, in just 445 innings. He only threw away 13.2% of the attempt at base players. Nevertheless, the Padres probably prefer Maldonado above Campusano as a third catcher, so it is no harm to keep him around as injury insurance in a position of weak organizational depth.
