The San Diego Padres used sloppy defense by Willson Contreras and the St. Louis Cardinals and turned the mistakes into a 4-1 win in Petco Park, Friday.
Jake Cronenworth was at first base in the second half of the fifth inning after a one-out walk. Jose Iglesias hit a ground ball to the third base and Nolan Gorman made a throw that threw the glove from the first Honkman Contreras and allowed him to be safely reached. Contreras picked up the ball and threw it away with a throw to third base, allowing Cronenworth to score to bind the game, 1-1. Iglesias could continue to second place.
Elias Diaz followed with a single to midfield so that Iglesias could score to give San Diego a 2-1 lead. Fernando Tatis Jr. A walk worked to put runners in the first instance and second and Luis Arraez crashed to load the bases.
Manny Machado faced St. Louis -Reliever Matt Svanson, who came in to replace starter Matthew Liberatore. He spent the second from the inning. Jackson Merrill stepped in and delivered a two-out two-run single that San Diego suggested 4-1. Xander Bogaerts were at an end to end the inning, but the four points were an emphatic reaction to the run scored by St. Louis at the top of the fifth.
Padres starting pitcher Nick Pivetta did not allow the top of the fifth inning. Contreras hit a solo-home run to the left midfield that gave the cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Pivetta completed seven innings and only allowed one point on one hit with five strikeouts and no walks allowed. He turned the ball to one of the new additions of San Diego Roster, Mason Miller, in the first half of the eighth inning.
Miller allowed back-to-back singles, but then eliminated Jordan Walker and caused a double play of the groundball of the bat from Yohel Pozo to complete a scoreless inning in his first performance as a member of the Padres.
Robert Suarez arrived in the first half of the ninth inning and was a lead -off single to Victor Scott II. He then received a fly from Brendan Donovan and a double game from Ivan Herrera’s ground ball to seal the victory and get the rescue.
De Padres host the cardinals for the second game of their series, Saturday at 7:10 pm
