The Brown Harness Racing Family from Kapunda, in the famous Barossa Valley Wine Region in South Australia, has their own “Corker” – not from the vineyard, but of the circuit – in the form of evergreen trotting mare our Spitfire (Majestic son).
Nine -year -old booked a new strong victory for old participants PETA and Terry Brown in the Aldebaran Park Trotters Handicap in Globe Derby Park on Saturday evening (July 26).
“She is my pet and I just love her. The victory was her 16th for us and she just has been the perfect bread and butter horse for our family,” Terry said.
“Both our son Nick and I have led her to win. She is really the most beautiful mare you could get, and she keeps going around every week and gives her the best even though she is a round if I am!” He laughed.
Well -known loving around the stables as “happiness”, our Spitfire is owned by New Zealand by Frank “Snowy” Weaver and his wife Marilyn.
The couple breeding the mare, who won twice in Cambridge in 2019 before being sent to Brett Lilley’s Melbourne Stable, where she added three more victories.
“Ryan Hryhorec then got the horse here and was not lucky because she kept galloping and pulling her head off,” Terry said.
“I saw her for sale at the trade ring and I thought the horse might go well, despite a few problems. After he had spoken with Frank on the phone, he decided to let us go with her.”

The browns have found a winning formula with our Spitfire and carefully manages her racing to match her peculiarities.
“We limit our Spitfire to only standing start because she is absolutely hopeless in mobile barriers,” Terry explained.
“I think she has only achieved one win of 41 attempts in mobile races and it was not for us. She can pull very hard, but when she is in a standing start, she just ping out and she comes into her rhythm very quickly.”
Although they have never met the weavers personally, Terry said that the connection is strong.
“We have never met them, but we often talk on the phone. They just love her to death and send nice SMS messages. Frank is one of the best guys you would find in the world, who used to have a nice trotter in the day in pride of Petite (trained by the Purdons in Nieuw -Zeeland),” he said.
The browns have a family stable of 10 horses, in which everyone plays a role.
“It is a family affair. Apart from Nick and I, there is my wife Peta and daughter Charli, who is also doing very well with the pony proud,” Terry said.
“Charli has a few years to go before she can ride the races, but she is pretty enthusiastic and tells us that one day she will already drive!”
While Terry was in the Sulky for Saturday’s victory, Nick today (July 28) will take the reins when our Spitfire returns to the track.
“Nick has been successful with her, but one of our other consistent (Pacer) Bettor’s lively is his favorite,” Terry said.
“Those two horses hate each other, but they seem to go everywhere. I think our Spitfire still has a victory than he and $ 5000 more in Stakemoney.”
“And I think ‘Lucky’ has a big chance to win another victory (this afternoon). We are so proud of her overall record – 21 victories, 32 seconds and 17 third from 181 starts for more than $ 122,000.”
