The US Open Mixed Doubles Draw -Ceremony took place on Sunday and the long -awaited event will not waste time at the beginning. The first and second round promotion at Flushing Meadows is on Tuesday afternoon, with the semi -finals and final that follow on Wednesday evening.
From the round one to the semi-final, competitions are the best-of-three sets with short sets to four games with no-ad scores, tie treakers on 4-4 and a 10-point super-nece-breaker for the third party. The final is the best-of-three sets with no-ad-score, tiebreakers on 6-6 and a 10-point super-tie-trader for the third.
Here are some of my choices for the first round.
Madson Keys and Frances Tifoe vs. Iga Swiatek and Casper Ruud
It is difficult to feel good about the opportunities on Swiatek and Ruud. Swiatek has no days off after being confronted against Jasmine Paolini in the Cincinnati Singles Final on Monday evening. Ruud has only won three singles competitions since the French open and misses a large part of the past months and the entire grass-Court swing-outdation injuries. The Norwegian has some Double experience … but not much. The biggest key to mixed doubles is perhaps the woman who can serve her, and Keys has one of the biggest services on the WTA tour. She and Tiafoe clearly also have a home advantage in this, too.
Choose: Testing and Tiafoe in 2
Jessica Peguula and Jack Draper vs. Emma Raducanu and Carlos Alcaraz
Just like Swiateek, Alcaraz will also make a quick turn after he went to the Cincinnati final in the Cincinnati final on Monday afternoon against Jannik Sinner. Yet the second ranked enough should have been in the tank to win at least one mixed double match in New York. Raducanu was the US Open Singles Champion in 2021, so she must always feel good at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center. In the meantime I don’t have much faith in Pegula and Draper, even though it is the best seeds (sowing hardly means anything in this case). Pegula is an accomplished double player, but Draper has been injured since Wimbledon. He didn’t play a match in more than six weeks. Raducanu and Alcaraz have a great chance of upset.
Pick: Raducanu and Alcaraz in 3
Caty McNally and Lorenzo Musetti vs. Naomi Osaka and Gael Monfils
This is my favorite choice of the first round. In Women’s Dubbels, McNally is a double US Open Runner-Up and two-time Australian Open Quarter Finalist. Musetti has just reached the Cincinnati Men’s Doubles final with colleague Italian Lorenzo Sonego on Sunday. Osaka and Monfils are not doubles – and that is an understatement. They will probably be on the field for nothing more than entertainment; McNally and Musetti will be there to win … this game and maybe even the entire tournament.
Pick: McNally and Musetti in 2
