British No. 4 Katie Boulter overcame a challenging opening round against local wildcard Lucie Havlickova on Tuesday to beat the Czech 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 in an hour and 48 minutes at the WTA 250 Ostrava Open in the Czech Republic.

I feel like things are going well at the moment. I think we’re all quite calm, which really helps, because I have that energy around me, which is important for me as a tennis player. Katie Boulter

Boulter is currently ranked 120th and 23rd in the world, but had a difficult season last year, riddled with injuries and loss of form, which led her to end her three-year working relationship with Biljana Veselinovic and subsequently appoint Michael Joyce as her coach.

Boulter is hopeful she can rediscover her best form and return to the top of the WTA Tour this year with the help of Joyce, a former player who has worked with Maria Sharapova, Johanna Konta, Jessica Pegula, Victoria Azarenka and Eugenie Bouchard, with her most recent collaboration being a four-year tenure with Ashlyn Krueger.

“Personally, I always really liked him,” Boulter said of the appointment three weeks ago. “I thought he did really well with a lot of the other players… Jessie, Ashlyn. I feel like he’s been on tour for a long time. He’s someone I didn’t get to know that well until I spent time with him on the court, and I really like his style.

“I feel like things are going well at the moment. I think we’re all quite calm, which really helps because I have that energy around me, which is important for me as a tennis player.”

Boulter wanted to turn her fortunes around this season and effectively dismantled Havlickova’s hopeful resistance on the hard courts of Ostrava on Tuesday.

After facing a tough schedule at the start of the year, Boulter suffered recent defeats to Top 10 opponents Belinda Bencic and Elina Svitolina in January, but she took advantage of the opportunity against 276th-ranked Havlickova to record her second main draw victory of the season.

The deciding set highlighted the difference in experience between the two, and although Havlickova managed to level the match, Boulter’s aggressive basic play in the third set mirrored her dominant performance against Yuliia Starodubtseva earlier this year, avoiding an upset in Ostrava.

For twenty-year-old Havlickova, the loss marks a difficult transition to the new season.

Despite a fruitful end to 2025, which saw her reach an ITF final against Elena-Gabriela Ruse in late November and claim a title over Elizara Yaneva, both in Slovakia, the talented young Czech has now fallen in the opening round of her last two events, including a loss to Francisca Jorge in late January.

On Day 3 in Ostrava, Katie Volynets upset No. 1 seed, Tatjana Maria of Germany, to advance to the quarterfinals, where she met her compatriot Alycia Parks.

Meanwhile, unseeded American Katie Volynets upset No. 1 seed Tatjana Maria of Germany 7-5 6-1 to advance to the quarter-finals, where she met compatriot Alycia Parks.

Volynets, ranked 96th, produced an impressive performance to upset 54th-ranked Maria inside an hour and 32 minutes, effectively dismantling the German veteran and taking control after a tightly contested opening set.

This result reinforces a developing trend between the two, as Volynets also defeated Maria in their previous meeting on grass in July 2025.

In contrast to that grueling two-and-a-half-hour marathon, Volynets neutralized Maria’s defensive play much more efficiently on Ostrava’s hard courts.

The win provides crucial momentum for Volynets, who had a rocky start to 2026 with early losses to Iva Jovic and Ann Li, as the battle continues to heat up for Maria.

The German has failed to string together victories since October and has suffered setbacks against lower-ranked opponents such as Tatiana Prozorova and Petra Marcinko.

Volynets saved 3 of 4 break points and converted 5 of 11 break chances to set up the meeting with Parks, who recorded a 6-4 6-2 victory over Armenia’s Elina Avanesyan.

Another American, No. 6 seed Caty McNally, also reached the quarterfinals with a 6-4 6-4 win over Czech Tereza Martincova.

In the first round, fourth-seeded Rebecca Sramkova of Slovakia defeated Czech Vendula Valdmannova 6-2 6-3, and fifth-seeded Viktorija Golubic of Switzerland defeated Austria’s Sinja Kraus 6-4 6-0.
