New York has appointed Hamel for an assignment earlier this week and the 26-year-old will change organizations for the first time in his professional career. Hamel was a third round pick for the Mets in the 2021 design, and his time at the club Culminated in his Major League debut last Wednesday. Despite three singles and a hit batter about a single effect of work, Hamel escaped from his first MLB competition without runs.
The long ball is Hamel’s biggest obstacle in his climb on the Minor League ladder because his homer rate was considerably nailed after he made his Triple-A debut in 2024. Over 192 1/3 innings in Triple-a Syracuse, Hamel allowed 35 home runs in the last two. On the positive side, he placed a solid strikeout speed at Triple-A, and he reduced his walking speed of 13.2% in 2024 to 7.4% this season.
Due to the 2025 campaign, Hamel also has a full-fledged starter role to more use as a relief pitcher, sometimes in a regular bullpen role and other times as a opener or as a multi-inning reliever. At least the Bottom-Line figures were somewhat better for Hamel as a Reliever (4.61 ERA) than as a starter (6.18 ERA), although the roll change did not unlock a new level of success.
The statement of Baltimore gives the Orioles for some time to evaluate Hamel in both the rest of this season and in the winter. Although Hamel may again be a DFA candidate, depending on how the Orioles upgrades their 40-man Roster during the low season, he has all three of his minor League options, so that flexibility can give him some extra attraction on Baltimore’s 2026 bullpen planning.
