Onyx Ten goes in the hunt for a hat-trick in Safely Kept

Frank Sample’s homebred Onyx Ten will aim for her third straight win when she starts in the Safely Kept Stakes at Laurel Park on Saturday.

The Gary Capuano-trained daughter of Street Magician has won all four sprint attempts in 2025. Her only loss this season came when she raced a mile in the Beyond the Wire Stakes on March 22. After that defeat, Capuano decided to give Onyx Ten a break, and the decision turned out to be a very wise one.

Returning from a 176-day hiatus, Onyx Ten picked up the pace en route to a limited allowance score in Delaware on September 14. The following month she rallied mightily to defeat older horses in the Shamrock Farm Maryland Million Distaff.

“She came back great,” Capuano said last week.

He entered Onyx Ten in the Willa On the Move Stakes last Saturday, but opted to wait for the Safely Kept after drawing the railpost position against a field of older horses.

John Middleton’s Grayson’s Girl enters the Safely Kept following a final victory in a state limited allowance at Laurel on September 19 for leading trainer Brittany Russell.

Grayson’s Girl got on the board in both starts last year and then passed by eight lengths in a first special weight for 3-year-old fillies on April 11. She placed top three in her four subsequent starts, including a second-place finish in the limited Miss Disco Stakes at Colonial Downs on July 12.

“She’s been knocking on the door for a while,” Russell said after the recent benefits victory. “She’s had some bad luck, tough travel, stuff like that, but she’s just a tough, tough girl who loves her job and always shows up.”

Russell believes the six-furlong distance could be Grayson Girl’s optimal journey.

“It’s funny because with her running style you would think she wants to go a route,” she explained. “But I think she’s a little limited in distance. I think she’s a sprinter. She wants to settle down and run.”

JR Ranch and My Racehorse’s Reputation are the 3-1 favorite on DeRosa’s morning line. Conditioned by Kentucky Derby-winning trainer Gustavo Delgado, Reputation is shipped from her South Florida base after finishing third in Gulfstream’s Grade 3 Princess Rooney Stakes on September 20. With the $450,000 yearling purchase, she won her stakes debut two races back in Colonial’s Tyson Gilpin Stakes on August 9.
