Onesmoothoperator continues career in Australia | At The Races

Onesmoothoperator, the horse who fulfilled Brian Ellison’s lifelong ambition when he won the Northumberland Plate in 2024, has remained in Australia after his latest run in the Melbourne Cup.

For the second year running, the seven-year-old tasted success on his travels, adding last month’s Moonee Valley Cup to the Geelong Cup he won last year.

Unfortunately, heavy rain turned the conditions against him in the big one, but that hasn’t deterred his suitors and he won’t be returning to Malton.

Reflecting on his performance in the Melbourne Cup, Ellison said: “It rained all day and he has to bounce off the ground.

“We wanted to compete in the Geelong Cup again but the wind was terrible so the race was postponed for 24 hours but the ground was soft so he couldn’t run.

“We went to Moonee Valley instead and it was brilliant there, it was worth A$750,000.

“I was devastated when it rained on Tuesday (of the Melbourne Cup). Every day he was vetted and he couldn’t have been better. He came out of Moonee Valley so well, everything was perfect.”

“His jockey came out to ride him on Saturday and said he was feeling great, he wouldn’t trade him for anything – and then the rain came.

“He’s been to Australia twice and won twice, won over a million and now 50 percent of him has been sold, so he’s staying there.”
