As one of the best cognac brands in the world, Louis XIII would hardly look out of place on well-appointed dining tables from Paris to Puyang. So perhaps it was inevitable that it would eventually expand beyond the liquid, to other elements of the gastronomic milieu. That time is now.

This month introduces Louis XIII Crockerythe very first tableware line ever in the 151-year history of the legendary spirit maker. The elegant porcelain offering is released in two separate collections: ‘Soil is Our Soul’ and ‘Light of Time’, both inspired by the cognac house’s elevated sense of style and craftsmanship.

“These Art de la Table collections mark a new chapter in the Louis XIII art de vivre,” said Anne-Laure Pressat, executive director of the brand, in a press release. “They are an invitation to discover or rediscover Louis XIII through a brand new, sublime experience.”

Each of the two collections takes its visual cues from the terroir and taste of Grande Champagne. For those unfamiliar with the category, this is the original cru from which Cognac grapes were grown. To this day, it remains the premiere region for the liquid, and the one from which Louis XIII exclusively derived his eaux de vie.

The Soil is Our Soul collection evokes the region with subtly rough touchstones, reminiscent of the chalky soils of Grande Champagne. Light of Time is purposefully more enigmatic in its approach. The porcelain in this set is characterized by faceted edges that play with light and shadow in a way that reflects how cognac evolves under the darkening of French oak.

To bring the concept to life, Louis XIII’s team enlisted the expertise of JL Coquet, himself a legendary French name with 200 years of history. The company developed a laser engraving technique especially for this collaboration, with which a subtle fleur-de-lys was printed on the back of each piece.

In addition to that design, there is a more subtle element: three hoops that are barely noticeable with the naked eye. They refer to the large wooden barrels, known as tierçons, in which Louis XIII matures for decades. Plus, they also serve as a means of authentication for a lavish array of practical art that retails for as much as $4,000 per collection, about as much as you’d spend on a full bottle of liquidin the brand’s iconic crystal decanter.

The porcelain is also available in individual pieces. They are available from this month onwards Louis XIII e-retail site.
