I know Nathan MacKinnon is focused on the task at hand in Italy, which makes sense when you consider that this is his first attempt at an Olympic medal of any color in his already highly decorated career. Personally, I’d leave the hockey stuff alone for a day or two before the event starts, because it’s Italy where food, culture and history are everywhere! One of the things I really enjoyed while the pandemic raged was Stanley Tucci’s Looking for Italy TV show that aired on CNN where he visited different regions in Italy to discover the local food and culture.Well, NBC spoke to the U.S. women’s team who were having lunch with Mr. Tucci in Italy while enjoying some time away from the rink!

Firstly, the risotto the group was served looked so good and I feel a little jealous when I see that. But honestly, how cool is it that the five American players got to have lunch in Milan, talk hockey and eat some good food with Oscar-winning Stanley Tucci? The fact that Tucci would want to be a forward is pretty cool, Stanley’s questioning of the Canada-US rivalry was funny, and it’s pretty great to see Tucci get a jersey! Are The devil wears Prada reference at the end has been funny and relevant ever since the sequel to that movie coming out this year!
Look, HBIC isn’t giving up its Canadian heritage or pride, but I would happily represent the US if I could hang out with Stanley Tucci for an hour. The man is a big screen legend and he knows good food. I bet the conversation would become lively and there would be lots of laughter when the risotto was consumed. I know he was excited that the women were going to sign his sweater for him, but I wish he would sign a menu from the restaurant for me to take with me! He’s Stanley Tucci!
That said, it should come as no surprise that the Canadian women’s team was high on carbs pasta and focaccia as favorite choices for meals. Apparently, however, the idea of pasta as a daily meal exists is not the ideal meal for some athletes because they crave a more “homely meal”, it seems. For the Italian kitchen staff, it seems they are learning from it the mistakes made in Paris.
For the most part, it seems that the food served in Milan is praised by the athletes, both for its taste and its availability. Elisabetta Salvadori, head of food and beverage at the Games, does not let that praise go to her or her staff.
“I’m Italian, so I’m a little superstitious,” she said Reuters with a smile. “But so far we haven’t had any major problems. Just a few little things that you expect at first. Someone asked for oatmeal in the morning. It was already there.”
Although the risotto enjoyed by the U.S. women’s hockey team and Stanley Tucci was not on the menu, it seems the food in Italy won’t be a reason for anyone to miss out on their event. And if these athletes prefer carbs, expect Nice, France, to import a ton of pasta from Italy for their 2030 Olympiad!
Until next time, keep your sticks on the ice!
