Everyone who viewed the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 2021 knows Steele as Tamyra Mensah-Stock. She won the gold medal in the 68-Kilogram Freestyle competition of the ladies and became the first female African-American and first black female wrestler who won Olympic gold.
She became a viral sensation during the Olympic Summer Games.
However, she told Fox News Digital in a recent interview that the urge to continue to arise on the wrestling mountain top and that freestyle struggles became more a chore.
“I am a natural athlete. God gave me a natural ability to just crush people and I love to do it and I enjoy doing it. When I won the Olympic Games, I had a lot of pleasure in it, but it was during Covid when no one was around, and it was very, very unfortunate that there was no one in the crowd,” she said. “I was struggling for two more years and I didn’t have much love for it.
“Every time I were to struggle someone, it was easy abroad. And what I love is doing hard work and having someone fight me and just have that fight. That which brings me joy and pleasure – I don’t know why, I am sadistic, but whatever you want to call it, it’s the hunter in me.”

Steele said she “bored” with Olympic training, and when WWE knocked on her door, she replied. She entered WWE in 2023 in the hope of eventually reaching the main roster.
“When I found out that WWE wanted to take me with me, I think:” This will be a new company and this will be exciting, it will be something that is fresh for me, “she said.” And I feel for me, it was my calling of God. It was an absolute blessing because I am here. I have discovered, I swear, joy in life all over again. “
Cutting weight behind her and the ability to show her personality more was also something that encouraged Steele. She embraced the new challenge in a new sport.
“So, why am I here? I am here because I have the feeling that I was called here,” she told Fox News Digital. “I am here because I enjoy the fight. I am here because I get a new start to become a new person and get my face and energy in new eyes. And I can also bring my fans who are like:” No, wait, do another Olympic Games. “No, no, no, see me in the WWE.
Steele won the “WWE LFG” competition on the women’s side and now gets the chance to really offer her skills in NXT.
