Mansfield-Reignend Three-time division 2 State Champion Oliver Ames wants to find where it will get two games of production in this season.
After they are excluded in their season opener, the Tigers received just enough attack on Monday evening with a 1-0 win in a rematch of last year’s semi-final against Hockomock League-Rival Mansfield.
The great defensive performance of Oliver Ames made Victor Nascimento’s goal the difference when the Tigers noted their second consecutive shutout to start the season by choking the hornets.
“It was really a good game for us early in the season to have so much of the ball and so much possession,” said Oliver Ames head coach John Barata. “It was nice to have. But we had to end. We have to find out.”
Among other things (1-0-1) felt offensive to snakes until it found the back of the net in the 35th minute, thanks to Nascimento.
A rapid complication led to a strong cross by Josh Braz Ferreira, and Nascimento established a limiting ball on the left side of the box before he hit Mansfield keeper Troy Lasbury-Casey (five Saves) for the goal.
“In a game like this, when you play against a great team like Mansfield, you must have the differences. And the tenacity and intensity,” said Barata. “We needed good players there. Victor has skill and tenacity, so it was good to put him on and see what he could do. And he delivered.”
That was more than enough for the defense of, among others, who compiled six straight clean sheets that date from last season.
Alejandro Landaverde, Lukas Hallama, Ryder Mercieri, Nick Babanikas and Bailey Gavin were great in the back for goalkeeper Zack Gilson (two Saves). And when Mansfield (1-1) tested the defense of, among others, the Tigers always had an answer.
Apart from Brandon Gardner, who hit a long free kick on a long free kick in the 64th minute, the Hornets had their best score chance of less than five minutes in the second half when Mario Harrison came behind, among other things. Sujay Gaddam put the ball to Harrison, but he had no chance to put a shot on the net while Hallama came in to erase the ball.
“We practice recovery defensive, and that was a textbook what he did,” said Barata. “That was the only real scary chance they had all the game. … That moment was great for us to teach that team defense is crucial.”
