Old Friends celebrates Silver Charm’s 32nd anniversary

Despite recent rain and snow events hampering additional festivities, Old Friends CEO and President John Nicholson, along with founder Michael Blowen, welcomed the volunteer team to celebrate the momentous event and recognize them as their equine superstar. Silver charm turned 32 years old on February 22.

Birthday cakes (human and horse) and a hearty rendition of “Happy Birthday” were part of the festivities, along with plenty of pats and selfies for the oldest living winner of the Kentucky Derby (G1), who was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2007.

“Silver Charm is feeling good and bouncing around his stable this week,” Blowen said. “He did well through the snow, ice and rain.”

Silver Charm has captured the hearts of many who are now lifelong fans. Silver Charm, the star attraction at Old Friends, where thousands of fans visit the champion each year, is Old Friends’ top fundraiser due to its popularity and longevity.

Although Blowen enjoys visiting all the Old Friends retirees, he always says that Silver Charm is his favorite. Silver Charm is located in a meadow just steps from Blowen’s back door. “He’s the Breadcrumb King and makes the most of having only four teeth. He gives me a kiss every day,” said Blowen, who chuckled. “Of course, that’s while I’m holding his Mrs. Pastures’ crumbs and I have his attention.”
