After her team Gold in Barcelona, she represented Uzbekistan at the next three games, but after she moved to Germany when her son was diagnosed with leukemia, she got citizenship and changed faithfully.
Her second Olympic medal was a silver in the safe while he represented Germany during the Beijing matches of 2008.
During the 2012 matches, she represented Germany in London and then switched back to Uzbekistan for the Olympic Games in 2016 – and qualified for the delayed competitions in Tokyo in 2021.
Chusovitina retired briefly after the Tokyo matches, but returned to the sport only 67 days later.
Speaking of the decision in 2023, she said: “I just realized, I felt that I can do this. Why would I leave the sport if it brings me joy?”.
Earlier this season she had won gold on the Baku World Cup and Bronze on the Cottbus World Cup.
By the time that athletes go to the United States for the 2028 matches in Los Angeles, Chusovitina will be 53 years old, but she has not excluded a ninth trip to the Olympic Games.
“My number one goal is to go to Los Angeles,” she said for this week’s competition.
“But there is so much time for that time, so I don’t think so far ahead. I am going step by step, from one competition to the next. If it happens, it happens. If not, then no. But I will try, and I’ll give everything I have.”
