On Tuesday (August 26), the Edmonton Oilers announced their promotional schedule from 2025-26Unveiling 16 unique theme games spread over their 41 home data on Rogers Place.

From the appreciation of the Canadian armed forces to hockey fights cancer to native celebration, many of the promotional games that have become tradition in the oil country, are back before 2025-26.

But there was at least one striking absence in the schedule: the Oilers Hall of Fame Game. A user on X inquired, and The Oilers responded By posting: “We will not perform a ceremony this season, but we look forward to honoring more iconic members of the organization with future inductions.”

History of Oilers Hall of Fame

The Oilers Hall of Fame was founded in 2022, with a mandate of recognizing the most extraordinary players, coaches, trainers, employees and managers involved in the franchise. Glenn Anderson, Paul Coffey, Lee Fogolin, Grant Fuhr, Wayne Gretzky, Al Hamilton, Jari Kurri, Kevin Lowe, Mark Messier, Rod Phillips and Glen Sather all received automatic induction by having raised a banner by the Oilers.

Starting with the 2022-23 season, two people were initiated each year as part of the theme of the Oilers Hall of Fame theme, with an induction ceremony before or after the game.

Lee Fogolin and Ryan Smyth were initiated when the Oilers organized the New Jersey Devils on November 3, 2022; Charlie Huddy and Doug weight went into the Oilers Hall of Fame prior to the Edmonton match against the New York Rangers on October 26, 2023; and Randy Gregg and Craig Mactavish received their induction on October 25, 2024, after the Oilers had defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 4-0.

Changes in the theme -games of oilers

The total of the oils of 16 theme games in 2025-26 is a decrease in relation to 2024-25, when 18 of their games contain a special theme. Together with the Hall of Fame game, five other theme matches of 2024-25 do not appear on the schedule of this season: Black Excellence, Lunar New Year, hockey discussions (consciousness of mental health), Ukrainian heritage and the welcome of new Canadians.

In a press release in which their theme games from 2025-26 were announced, the Oilers stated that Black Excellence, Lunar New Year and Ukrainian heritage will return in 2026-27. In particular, no mention was made of the future of the Hall of Fame game.

There are four new additions to the line-up of Themagames in 2025-26: Halloween, Remembrance Day, Olympic shipment and St. Patrick’s Day.

Oilers -fans embrace the heroes of today

Why the oilers decided not to play a Hall of Fame match this season is not clear. It is certainly not lacking in worthy Inductes. But it can say something that they do not consider the Hall of Fame as an essential part of their seasonal programming.

Last year the induction ceremony of Edmonton Oilers Hall of Fame was held after the team against Pittsburgh’s match, and most fans chose not to stay around. Videos made during the ceremonies show Dozens of empty seats While Gregg and Mactavish were recognized. It was an embarrassing scene and you couldn’t help it, but you feel bad for the two Inductes.

Was that an indication of how the Modern Oilers Fanbase feels about the distant history? A quick scan of the crowd during games on Rogers Place reveals a fairly young demography, with many fans who would not have even been alive when Gregg and Mactavish played.

There is now a whole generation of fans who Treasure Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but do not hold the Oilers of the 1980s with reverence. And that is completely understandable: every generation has its own heroes.

Oilers used to prioritize the past

The irony of all this is that the oilers were accused of being detained in the past for years. There was a rotating door of former players who worked in coaching, scouting or executive roles with the team, and the oilers never had a shortage of programming that celebrated the glory days.

But let’s be honest: for the longest time all oilers were their past. This is a team that the Play -Offs missed 10 consecutive years from 2007 to 2016, also known as the “decade of darkness”. As bad as things were in the here and now, the oilers could always bow back the attention to their five Stanley cups from the past.

With back-to-back runs to the Stanley Cup final in 2024 and 2025, the oilers are now at a point where the present is so exciting that no one longs for the past. The absence of the Hall of Fame game has almost no response to social media, except that of the aforementioned X user user.

Oilers Hall of Fame Game could return

Nevertheless, it is a pity that the oilers will not add their Hall of Fame in 2025-26. There are many individuals who still earn their flowers, and they are not all from the 1980s. Some, such as Ales Hemsky, Shawn Horcoff and Jason Smith, played for the Oilers for the past 20 years.

Will the Hall of Fame process be resumed in 2026-27? The post of the oilers on X says that there will be inductions in the future, but their press release will not report the Hall of Fame game that will return next season. This is something that will be very interesting in 12 months to see when the oilers announce their theme games before 2026-27. It will also be interesting to see how many fans generally give in one way or another. After all, the top priority in the oil country in 2026 is the Stanley Cup.
