Perhaps it is too early for teams to think about the NHL trading deadline of 2026 that is closed. Yet, for the Edmonton Oilers, they know all their way to make an important movement, it is challenged by how they are fascinated with clauses on some players they could act about it.
In the summer, management came to many players in the team and had quiet conversations about no-trade clauses. Everyone except Viktor Arvidsson and Evander Kane called on their right to stay.
A report asked in the summer by Elliote Friedman was that GM Stan Bowman sat down with different veterans who held trade protection to gauge their openness to a movement. Players such as Darnell Nurse and Adam Henrique made it clear that they were not willing to leave and wanted to be part of the current Stanley Cup pressure of the club.
Those conversations will ultimately loom great.
Bowman has limited flexibility, and although cap -space becomes more available in the competition, for the oilers, things are still tight. Any important addition may require the contract to be moved from a player who is currently not willing to refrain.
What if these oilers don’t change your mind?
According to Oilers Insider Bob Stauffer, the target of Edmonton is clear: a larger top 9 ahead to add size and scoring depth. Last year’s Trent Frederic Acquisition, followed by an eight -year extension, is seen as the model for what the team may want to do again. If they can get that type of player, they will try. However, because the current schedules are more difficult to make a direct financial trade, the oilers could be willing to move their 2027 first round pick.
That choice, although valuable, can land fewer countries than their ideal target.
For now, the question is not only who the oilers want – it is who is willing to go. Part of it can be determined by how the season takes place and who gets opportunities and who does not.
