The Edmonton Oilers started discussions with defender Jake Walman with regard to a potential contract extension, although sources indicate that a deal may not be completed in the near future. The timing seems to be linked to the continuous contract situation of Captain Connor McDavid.
Mark Spector of Sportsnet reported that Walman’s agent, Wade Arnott, met a meeting with Oilers Management last Friday to discuss conditions. Things go further and it sounds like a deal is close by. However, all parties will wait to make it official or to announce a deal until the McDavid extension is public news.
Walman, 29, is in the last year of his three -year contract of $ 10.2 million and is eligible for an unlimited free agency on July 1, 2026.
Walman was added during a deal with San Jose in a deal with San Jose and became an important contribution to the blue line of Edmonton. He was called to play big minutes when Mattias Ekholm was injured in the play -offs and he stepped in an important way.
Early speculation is that the Oilers and Walman watched a new deal between six and eight years, giving the defender some contract protection that he never had during his career in the NHL. In the meantime, the oilers looked at the term to keep his cap too manageable.
The extension discussions of Walman seem to go well and there should be no obstacles between the two parties. The timing of the announcement easily changes on the basis of when the McDavid extension is officially made. All players, including Walman and Ekholm, knew that McDavid probably comes first and that they will happen soon.
