The Edmonton Oilers have been a busy organization today. First they signed Connor McDavid with one Two -year contract extension. Now they have announced that they have signed defender Jake Walman for one Seven -year contract extension. The deal is worth $ 49 million and has an average annual value (AAV) of $ 7 million.

Now that the oilers have signed both players, they are slightly above the cap for next season. That makes it very interesting on the way to the coming weeks, because they find out how to become cap-compatible and at the same time sign Mattias Ekholm again.

Wallman has signed for a long time

When the Oilers brought in Wallman just before the NHL trading theadline of 2025 in a deal with the San Jose Sharks, there was a good chance that he would sign an extension. By locking him in the long term on a cap-hit of $ 7 million, with the cap that continues to rise, this deal could make a very good contract on the road, especially if the defender could earn up to $ 8 to $ 9 plus million per season.

That meant a career high for the 29-year-old, whose previous best 21 points was in 2023-24 with the Detroit Red Wings. During his career he played in 267 games and scored 32 goals and 59 assists for 91 points.
