Edmonton Oilers Insider Bob Stauffer has suggested that the team has drawn up two important contract extensions once the Connor McDavid deal has been completed. Talk about Oilers nowStauffer indicated that top-four defender Jake Walman could receive a six-year-old deal, while winger Vasily Podkolzin is expected to sign a three-year contract.
This is not the first time that Walman’s long -term future has been discussed in Edmonton. Earlier this summer, Stauffer drove the possibility of an extension of eight years, with reference to changes in the SMEs as a potential negotiating boom tool that the oilers could use to lock Wallman in the long term. GM Stan Bowman confirmed conversations with Walman’s Camp and Stauffer at the time hinted that the trade for Walman, Podkolzin and veteran defender Mattias Ekholm would be signed around the same time as McDavid’s Deal.
Although that can still be accurate, those deals would probably follow as soon as McDavid’s contract is secured.
Wallman is the key to the blue line plans of the oilers
Walman, 29, goes into the last year of a contract of $ 3.4 million and has emerged as a reliable top-four defender, who surpasses the most blueline of the oilers in last season’s play-offs. Evan Bouchard remains the star Blueliner in the team, but Walman is a very useful player who could come at an affordable price as the salary limit rises. His combination of skill, passing and physicality makes him an important piece for Edmonton’s push during the first years of McDavid and Leon Draisaitl. He is completely around the perfect age to be at its peak during the Edmonton window to win.
Podkolzin is a perfect bridge deal -candidate
In the meantime, David Staples of the Edmonton Journal argues that Podkolzin, 24, has developed into a two -way wing that is capable of a strong pre -checking and backchecking, which achieves the nickname “Podzilla” among fans. A three-year-old deal offers flexibility and keeps him in the line-up alongside Draisaitl, making the oilers a fast, aggressive attacker who can contribute offensive and physically.
Stauffer projects Walman’s six -year -old deal in the ‘Sixes’, probably around $ 6 million per season, but it is unclear where the Oilers Podkolzin appreciates in terms of an AAV. After the eight -year extension of Trent Frederic at $ 3.85 million per season, nothing should be a surprise at the moment. The assumption is that the Podkolzin Oilers see as a useful piece, but not necessarily a proven raw material that is worth giving more than a bridge deal.
