The NHL season is coming and the expectation is palpable. This is the time of year in which we predict how our favorite team will do and how individual players will perform. For the Edmonton Oilers, they have high expectations on their way to this season after back-to-back Stanley Cup Final Appears and both times. They were so close and fans hope that they can come back there and finish the job.
A number of important selection were changing out of season this season, making the fan base both underwhelmed and optimistic at the same time. Although it is good to be optimistic, it is also important to be realistic. It is in our nature to appreciate players and to set unnecessary expectations, especially in this market. That is why some players have higher expectations than should. That said, here are the three most overrated oils that are on the way the 2025-26 season.
Isaac Howard
The Oilers have taken over Isaac Howard From the Tampa Bay Lightning in exchange for prospect Sam O’Reilly this season outside the season. Howard spent the last three seasons in the NCAA, with the last two at Michigan State University. Last season he recorded 26 goals and 52 points in 37 games on his way to winning the Hobey Baker Award, as the best collegial player in the nation. He comes in with a lot of hype and is expected to see time on a line with Connor McDavid. However, he is on this list because he will probably not satisfy those expectations.

He has not played NHL game yet, so it is unrealistic to assume that he will absorb more than 60 points in his Rookie season. The 21-year-old was not a first pick that was expected to have an immediate impact. He was prepared in 2022 in 2022, and it took him a few years at the university to develop into one NHL-KALIBRE player. There is no guarantee that he will succeed immediately, and if he struggles, don’t be surprised if he sees some time in the American Hockey League (AHL). There will be a learning curve, so fans have to tape their expectations. He is a very competent and exciting prospect, but at the moment fans are taking him on his way to the training camp.
Mattias Ekholm
Mattias Ekholm was a much needed addition to the Blue Line when they acquired it during the Handelsdeadline of 2023. He fit with Evan Bouchard like a glove. He increased Bouchard’s game and worked well together. The 6-foot-5, 225-Ponder has recorded 24 goals and 92 points in 165 games with a Plus-83 rating since the trade.
The Swedish defender is a calming veteran, but unfortunately father’s time is catching up. He fought against considerable injuries last season and limited him to only 65 regular season and seven Playoff matches. Once he returned during the Play -Offs, he recorded six points, but his defensive match got a big hit. He lost puckfights in the corners and struggled to keep the Florida Panthers elite forecheck during the Stanley Cup final. The 35-year-old is not the player he once was, so a big regression can be on his hands. If he stays healthy, don’t expect him to be the best defender he ever was.
Andrew Mangiaipane
Andrew Mangiapane was the great free agent of the oilers who splashes out of season this season and signed a two -year -old deal with a cap of $ 3.6 million at the organization. But as we saw last season, free agent -signing sessions do not always work. Some players do not fit well with the organization, as evidenced by the signing sessions of the Viktor Arvidsson and Jeff Skinner. Both players came in with a lot of hype and fanfare, but eventually became disappointments. They were consistently healthy in the play -offs and were not as impactful as initially thought. This resulted in running skinner to Free Agency and Arvidsson was traded to the Boston Bruins.
That does not mean that Mangiapane will not succeed, but how will he perform in a new team and in a new environment? That is the burning question because we don’t know yet. He had a career-high 55 points in 2021-22, but floated throughout his career between 28 and 43 points market. So it is quite optimistic and unrealistic to assume that he will produce more than that, even if he is in line with McDavid or Leon Draisaitl. Just like Howard, the fans have to dampen their expectations with the newcomers. For that reason he is overestimated on his way to 2025-26.
