The Edmonton Oilers took a risk by placing Noah Philp on waivers Sunday afternoon. It was a gamble that apparently backfired. The Carolina Hurricanes have made this claim Philp is waiving, meaning the Oilers can’t place the promising forward in the AHL and get no asset in return.
Everyone else cleared waivers, but Friedman suggested Philp was someone who could be poached by another team.

Friedman noted on the most recent 32 Thoughts podcast:
“People have told me that if he gets cleared on waivers – and maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t – this story might not be over yet. I think there are teams interested in him, but some might want the flexibility to send him down. If you claim a player on waivers, you can’t send him down for a month.”
The Hurricanes apparently aren’t worried about that. They need to see a role for him on the NHL roster, something he couldn’t earn with regularity in Edmonton. Some of that was due to a concussion, but as the Oilers get healthier and the competition for a spot at forward increases, Philp likely struggled to earn a consistent role.
Philp, 27, has three points in 15 games with the Oilers this season while winning 56.9% of his faceoffs. He has a total of five points in 30 NHL games, strong AHL production in Bakersfield and Stockton, and a solid resume from his time at the University of Alberta and in the WHL.
