Manchester United have confirmed that James Scanlon has completed a move to Swindon Town, where he will spend the remainder of the season.
The rise of Scanlon
Scanlon has enjoyed a steady rise through United’s youth system since joining the club from Derby County in February 2021.
He signed a scholarship with United in July 2023. In 2024 he received his first professional contract with the twenty-time English champion.
Scanlon has trained with the first team several times but is still waiting for his senior bow. That summer he was part of Erik ten Hag’s selection in the United States. Later that year, his form was rewarded when he was named Best Striker at the prestigious Otten Cup youth tournament.
The 19-year-old made history by becoming the first United player to represent Gibraltar. After making his senior international debut in March 2024, he scored his first goal in September, setting double records as Gibraltar’s youngest-ever goalscorer and the youngest goalscorer in UEFA Nations League history.
He earned his first inclusion in a senior United matchday squad in March last year, selected for the Europa League match against Real Sociedad.
Earlier on Monday, a report from The Peoples Person stated that Scanlon was closing in on a move to Swindon on deadline day.
Now United have confirmed the transfer.
Swindon move sealed and delivered
United has one statement which reads: “Manchester United striker James Scanlon has secured the first loan move of his career.”
“The 19-year-old will join League Two side Swindon Town for the remainder of the 2025/2026 season.”
United added: “Good luck to James for the rest of the season!”
Swindon currently sit sixth in League Two and are aiming for promotion to League One.
