A YouTuber was arrested in the Mayurbhanj district in Odisha for alleged cooking of the meat of a rare and protected reptile species, the monitor lizard and uploading his video on social media. The accused was identified as a Roop Nayak, a resident of the village of Asanabani in Mayurbhanj.
According to civil servants, Nayak returned from the site of his in-laws in Bhadrak when he saw a dead monitor lizard on the road at the road near the Banta area. He took it home, cut and cooked it and recorded the entire process on video before he uploaded it on social media.
Video activates indignation
The video quickly went viral and aroused indignation on social media. The forest department registered a case and started an investigation.
During the interrogation, Nayak gave his actions, after which he was arrested under several sections of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
“Serious violation,” say civil servants
A forest officer said the case came to light via social media. “During the interrogation, Roop told Nayak that he had gone to his parents -in -law with his wife. On the way back he saw a Dead Monitor Hagedis about two kilometers from Banta Chowk and wore it home,” said the civil servant.
“As YouTuber, he made a video of him who cooked his meat to promote his channel and earn money, which is a serious violation. A case has been registered and he has been sent to the court,” he added.
Forest officials clarified that hunting, killing or consuming a protected or endangered species is a serious crime under the law punished by both imprisonment and fines.
