The Egypt international has come under fire this season after starting the season with ‘just’ six goals in ten Premier League games.
Of course, by the same stage of the 2024/25 season, the number 11 had scored 12 goals in the English top flight.
Ally McCoist says Mo Salah is struggling this season
McCoist made it clear that Salah’s previous incredible services at Liverpool Football Club mean he has plenty of credit in the bank.
“It is very clear to me that there has been a decline in form for Salah,” the former Rangers star said TNT Sports.
“The first thing to say is if there is one player in the country who deserves a little dip in form… because he has been incredible.”

TNT’s Becky Ives replied: “He has 250 goals at Liverpool, think about that. [so] if that is a formal error…’
Ally McCoist continued: “That’s exactly my point. But I don’t think we’re doing our job if we don’t state the facts – and the facts are that I don’t think he’s played at the level he can.”
The Scot also pointed to possible mitigating factors that certainly played a role in the Reds’ mixed 2025/2026 season.
The fullback situation in particular has disrupted the previously established balance in the starting eleven.
Crucially for Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold’s departure to Real Madrid – coupled with Dominik Szoboszlai’s movement between right-back and midfield – has left the Egyptian isolated.
“One player in the country who could see a drop in form is Mo Salah”

Is Salah back at his best at Liverpool?
Mo Salah is at his devastating best when we see him get a lot of the ball into the opponent’s penalty area.
With an average of 6.34 ball contacts in the opponent’s penalty area (Photomob) in the Premier League this season, the 33-year-old remains among the elite of his positional colleagues in top-flight English football.
The good news for Arne Slot and Liverpool is that the change in shape (returning to the tried and tested 4-3-3/4-2-3-1) and shift in personnel appears to be bringing Salah closer to the action.
| Game | Touches in the opposition box |
| Aston Villa (H) | 5 |
| Real Madrid (H) | 9 |
Salah went goalless against Madrid but scored in the 2-0 win against Unai Emery’s Villa in the league.
It’s one small sample size, but an average of seven touches in the opposition in both games suggests that our most powerful offensive weapon is becoming increasingly involved in proceedings.
With Florian Wirtz having some fun on the left wing for Liverpool and Hugo Ekitike hitting the ground at L4, our forward looks a frightening prospect for any opponent.
