Oaklawn latest issue to be canceled; Southwest postponed

The severe winter conditions resulting from Winter Storm Fern, with cold temperatures pushing temperatures into the single digits in some parts of the United States, are still causing live racing cancellations across the eastern United States from Kentucky to the Northeast.

Oaklawn Park announced on January 27 the cancellation of its January 30-February 1 racing programs. All affected race days and associated events will be moved to the following weekend, February 5-8, maintaining one of the most important race weekends of the season.

The Southwest Stakes (G3) and the full supporting card, as originally drawn, will now be contested on Friday, February 6.

The American Beauty Stakes moves to Saturday, February 7, joining the Bayakoa Stakes (G3), which is expected to host the highly anticipated debut of 2026 Nitrogen last year’s reigning Eclipse Award-winning 3-year-old filly.

The originally planned Friday, January 30 card will be moved to Thursday, February 5. Races originally scheduled for Sunday, February 1, will be rescheduled and held on Sunday, February 8, an additional race day.

New York

The New York Racing Association has canceled races from Wednesday, January 28 through Friday, January 30 at 8 p.m. Aqueduct racecourse due to arctic temperatures and extremely low wind chill values ​​expected to impact the New York metropolitan area.

NYRA, in consultation with the Jockeys’ Guild, New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and New York Thoroughbred Breeders, will seek formal approval from the New York State Gaming Commission to conduct live racing on February 4, with additional make-up days to be determined at a later date.

Aqueduct Racetrack will be closed to the public on Wednesday, but will reopen for simulcast operations January 29-30. Online betting is possible via NYRABets.com.

The $135,000 Ladies Stakes, originally scheduled for Jan. 17 and then moved to Friday, will be pushed back on Saturday. Registrations for the Saturday ticket will be processed on Tuesday.

As previously announced, the $135,000 Interborough Stakes will return on February 6, with entries taking place on Saturday.

NYRA will bring back the races for Wednesday and Thursday as extras for Sunday and beyond, with registrations starting Wednesday.

The races currently offered in the condition book for Friday will be used for the proposed program of Wednesday 4 February, with entries due on Thursday.

Kentucky

Turfway Park Racing & Gaming has canceled its Wednesday and Thursday programs due to severe winter weather in the Florence, Kentucky area.

National Weather Service officials predict that wind chill will not rise above the single digits for the next 48 hours and will drop to minus 11 degrees on Wednesday.

Turfway Park officials continue to monitor the forecast and will make a decision on Friday and Saturday’s tickets on Wednesday.
