William Nylyer puts an end to speculation that Mitch Marner had already decided to leave the Toronto Maple Leafs halfway through the 2024-25 season. Speak with nhl.comDenied Nylander to be part of Marner’s accident in Toronto, or that his friend had out of the house a large part of last season.
Despite months of rumors around the star wing, Nylander insists that Marner remained fully dedicated to the team while he had contraction.
“I’m not sure where that stuff comes from, but I don’t think he ever thought of leaving in advance,” said Nylyer. “I actually asked him during the season, and he said he was focusing on Toronto. His game was aimed at helping us.” He added that although it is difficult to see Marner going, he is happy for his friend and his family.
Nylyer knows how much the NHL a company is. For him, Marner’s departure was little more than a business decision. Perhaps there was a part of him that was ready to continue and try something else, but Nylander hinted that that does not mean that Marner stopped or was something other than aimed at helping the Maple Leafs is accurate.
Nylyer and Marner were friends, despite speculation of friction
Nylyer and Marner share a long history that grew up in Toronto and have been teammates since 2016. That did not always mean it was rosy.
Nylyer trivialized the notorious “Grow Up” Bench Moment during the Play -offs of 2024 and called it a product of the heat of the competition. It was the same kind of exchange that teammates often have when the fighting is intense and games matter. Motivated that Marner to want to go out? Nylyer doesn’t think so.
Nylyer says he will miss Marner. “He is an incredible person,” said Nylyer. “Someone will now have to take on that role because he has done it incredibly. And for what he does on the ice, just an incredible player.”
In the future it is now on the Maple Leafs, in particular their star players in Auston Matthews and Nylander, to adapt. It will not be small that Marner, the best playmaker of the team, plays elsewhere. It will take time for everyone to learn to play without him.
