NY Times biz desk hires Campbell as investigative editor – Talking Biz News

I’m happy to announce that Alex Campbell joins Business as our new research editor.

Alex joins us from Bloomberg News in London, where he led a team of investigative journalists in Europe in recent years. In September, a story he edited about the emails between Jeffrey Epstein and the British ambassador in Washington led to the ambassador’s resignation. Other notable projects included a multi-part series on energy company maneuvers that led to higher energy bills for consumers in Europe, already under pressure from skyrocketing inflation.

Before Bloomberg, Alex spent nearly a decade at BuzzFeed News, first as a reporter and then as an editor, where he helped put the fledgling newsroom on the journalistic map. He was the editor-in-chief of the organization’s Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into China’s efforts to detain Muslim minorities en masse.

Alex has a wealth of fans and former colleagues at The New York Times, all eagerly awaiting his arrival.

Katie Bakerwho worked with Alex at BuzzFeed, described him as a generous, calming colleague who has a knack for cheering up those around him.

“We worked together on many major projects and I learned so much from him,” she said, “from uncovering difficult public documents to how to stay focused during a year-long investigation and how to remain calm under pressure when powerful people don’t want you to publish information about them.”

Katie added: “The story about Alex from the BuzzFeed newsroom was that one day everyone asked ‘How big is your ego?’ test, and while most people scored in the 20s, Alex got a 6.”

At The Times, Alex will lead a group of reporters focused on some of the Business Desk’s most ambitious accountability journalism. He will initially work in London before moving to New York around the holidays, when he will be looking to start a football league for washed-up European players.

Alex is originally from Massachusetts. After more than eight years, he returns to the United States with his wife and two young children, including a four-year-old whose British accent will likely melt away by the spring. He started at the end of October.
