More responsibility comes with great power. But with great territory, there is even greater responsibility.
That is true for NRL clubs, whose popularity is now being linked to the impact of the real estate market.
Since the top eight sides of this year’s competition look for the final, figures from research group Roy Morgan revealed that it is actually a Sydney team that this year is not in the running that the cake is most supported in the state.

The Parramatta Eels ended their campaign last season with 500.00 fans, most of each NSW-based team despite years of poor performance, but it is the absorption of homes and homes in the west that can explain why.
The western region has been converted into its own CBD in recent years, with more housing, more jobs and more affordability than inner city regions.
It has risen from the home base of 143,143 people at the time of the census of 2001, until now older than 180.00 in 2021. That is about an increase of 26 percent for two decades, which emphasizes serious growth in the area.
A similar trend helped to explain why the Brisbane Broncos where the most supported team of the NRL: the population of Brisbane has exploded with 500,000 people in the past decade.
Demographer Simon Kuestmacher of the Demographic Group said that the affordability of homes in the city dwellers wore new areas and NRL supporter bases were swelling.

This was especially clear in Sydney, Mr. Kuestmacher said. “(Families) need a home of three bedrooms. Where are we going? Well, you can’t stay in the city center because three bedrooms don’t exist. You can’t go to the immediate neighboring middle -rays,” he said.
“So you have to go to where housing is made available, housing, largely in family format. And that is of course Penrith. This is Parramatta. This is just outside that housing that is relatively affordable compared to what something would cost in the city center. And so you leave.”
Mr. Kuestenmacher said that a whole millennial generation was pushed to the west, which could contribute to a new wave of supporter fan basses over time.
Although the reasons why people support teams are much more complex – results and family members under the most obvious homes were a factor, said Mr. Kuestmacher.

The Penrith Panthers have also enjoyed a relatively high supporter numbers in recent years, not only because of the success of the field, but also as a growing population. Photo: Tom Parrish.
The Penrith Panthers, the most successful team of the decade, have enjoyed an increase of more than five percent in fans, one of the highest increase in the competition at 377,000, noted Roy Morgan.
While five consecutive major finals and four consecutive Premierships will do wonders for the successful fan base of each team, their admission to residents is because the abdominal games of the area population are not a small factor.
“Parramatta and Penrith have increasingly become CBDs in themselves in the past decades, so they have more and more local jobs available,” said Mr. Kustenmacher.
“That pushes people there. This is really where a lot of action happens.”
The dominance of territory has most likely had its greatest effect, with the Brisbane Broncos now becoming the most supported team, not only in Queensland, but throughout the NRL, with an emphatic 1.3 million supporters.

Until recently, the fan base of the Broncos was helped by representing an entire city, but the city and its surroundings are also highly.
2011 saw 2,065,996 people admitted as living in Brisbane, but by 2021 that number increased by almost half a million, ABS data.
“Many people leave NSW and go to Queensland and clearly a lot that Sydney leaves to go to Brisbane, or at least Southeast -Queensland. I think a big story about that is an affordability of housing,” real estate adviser Cameron Kusher revealed.
“If you are a passionate supporter of the game, you are still going to look at the game. If you move, say from Sydney to one of those markets, they may not be your favorite team, but you could adopt them if your team and they also start supporting them.”
