Usman Nurmagomedov kept his ‘O’ intact and scored another closely disputed victory over Paul Hughes in the PFL Dubai Headliner on Friday.
Nurmagomedov received Hughes Late in the first round, although it came for a while after Hughes had recorded a low blow that the referee chose to ignore. Hughes began to find his reach in the second, although that Nurmagomedov did not stop him to get him back again.
The third was the most competitive until that time, in which Hughes wanted to land his large right hand. Nurmagomedov, however, may have thrown the score cards in his favor with a late removal.
Less than a minute in the fourth, Hughes was the recipient of a new annoying low stroke that brought a break for the game. Hughes seemed to have enormous pain and lay the belly near the corner. Fortunately he was able to continue after a few moments. Shortly after the restart, Nurmagomedov noted a Takedown before he bastards Hughes with a brutal body kick.
With the fight possibly tied, we went to the fifth round. As was the case with the majority of the competition before, the last five minutes were fairly competitive. The main attack of De Ronde was due to an unintended collision of heads that Nurmagomedov opened with just over a minute to go.
Nurmagomedov responded with another large Takedown, placed an punctuation on De Ronde and achieved a big win over the Irish superstar.
Official result: Usman Nurmagomedov def. Paul Hughes via a unanimous decision (50-45, 49-46, 48-47) to win the PFL Lightweight World Championship.
