- Kasper Høglund restored a 1974 Land Rover Series III and documented the entire build.
- Norwegian authorities have stopped the registration, saying the vehicle is no longer the same due to the frame change.
- Despite complete documentation, the bureaucracy parked the truck and disrupted Høglund’s work.
Restoring an old vehicle takes time, patience, a little blood, a fair amount of swearing and a lot of learning. Norwegian photographer and filmmaker Kasper Høglund took the path of vehicle restoration with his now beautiful 1974 Land Rover Series III. But the Norwegian government simply stopped him.
According to Høglund, someone who followed his video series reported the truck to the government. The reason? That person claims that since Høglund switched to a new, stainless frame, it means it is no longer the same vehicle he started with.
Høglund has documented his restoration journey and it has been a pleasure to follow along. He represents the average wrench, so I’ve enjoyed watching his progress as I’m also deep into a project of my own. And it was inspiring to see Høglund’s methodical approach to getting this Series III into the right shape.
He did all his work in what looks like a cold garage. The gearbox has been rebuilt, the bodywork completely cleaned and all nuts and bolts are in better condition compared to when they left the Solihull factory. But because of the chassis change, Norway says the Series III is a no-go. At least at the moment.
Høglund says the chassis is an unaltered replica of the original. He also has the required supporting documents. In fact, his build is incredibly well documented and he has shared everything he has been asked to do with the government.
But unfortunately bureaucracy takes time. For now, Høglund has to park the truck. That’s a problem, since the filmmaker prepared it so he could live and work on it. It’s part of his livelihood. Hopefully there will be a positive solution to the situation soon, so that all that wonderful work is not lost.
Taking Motor1s: It’s strange that anyone watching that series would think Høglund did anything deceitful. His goal was to restore an iconic old machine while learning everything about it that makes it tick. Plus, it’s much better to keep an older car on the road than to let it sit and rot somewhere.
I hope someone in the Norwegian government comes to their senses, stamps his registration and lets Høglund back on the road.
