Director of Rackets (DOR)

Position Summary
The Director of Racquets (DOR) is responsible for the overall leadership, management and strategic direction of Northmoor Country Club’s racquet sports programs, including tennis, platform tennis and pickleball. This role oversees all programming, instruction, staff leadership, facilities, and financial performance associated with the racket department while producing a consistently exceptional member
and guest experience.
The DOR is balancing practice-oriented involvement of the judge of administrative and operational responsibilities. Playing time is primarily spent on private and group instruction, clinics, member engagement and other racket-related duties as directed by the General Manager/COO.
Core responsibilities
Member experience and program leadership:
- Provide a consistently exceptional, safe and engaging racquet experience for members and guests of all ages and levels.
- Maintain a highly visible presence and demonstrate strong leadership, professionalism and clear communication with both members and staff.
- Create, implement and continuously improve social, educational and competitive programming for tennis, platform tennis and pickleball.
- Develop and promote an annual racket calendar so that programs and events are communicated and marketed well in advance.
- Provide members of all levels with high-quality instruction and educational opportunities that encourage broad participation.
- Where possible, attend home and away games to better understand members’ skill levels and involvement.
Instruction and involvement on the field
- Offer private and group lessons, clinics, practices, exhibitions, camps and other instructional offerings in tennis, platform tennis and pickleball.
- Provide a free 30-minute promotional class for onboarding new members.
- Spend reasonable time playing with members as necessary (not considered formal lessons), including staff participation.
- Oversee staff-led classes and clinics to ensure consistency, quality and adherence to club standards.
Personnel leadership and human resources
- Manage, select, hire, train, coach and develop all racket department employees, including tennis, platform tennis and pickleball professionals.
- Conduct annual performance reviews, provide constructive feedback, and encourage professional and personal growth.
- Work with Human Resources to maintain updated job descriptions and ensure compliance with all HR policies and procedures.
- Promote a positive, responsible and service-oriented team culture.
Financial & Administrative Management
- Manage the department’s annual operating budget, capital planning, monthly financial performance and weekly payroll in coordination with the Financial Controller.
- Work with the General Manager/COO to develop future operating and capital budgets that address maintenance needs and strategic investments based on industry trends.
- Oversee all racket-related revenue streams, including lessons, guest fees, pro shop sales and ancillary income.
- Ensure accurate reporting, fiscal responsibility and operations within approved budget guidelines.
Programming, communication and marketing
- Provide clear, consistent and timely communication to members regarding schedules, programming, events and racquet sports news.
- Produce a monthly racket department newsletter highlighting upcoming programs, events and important updates.
- Develop programming content, brochures and promotional media to increase visibility and participation.
- Ensure there is an effective online registration system for events, social gatherings and group lessons (excluding private lessons).
Competitive play and competitive teams
- Coordinate Northmoor’s participation in inter-club competitions and external racket organizations.
- Work with lead professionals to assess membership interest in team play and organize all teams accordingly.
- Work with team captains on lineups, scheduling, availability and match logistics.
- Prepare racket committee agendas in coordination with the committee chair and attend all relevant staff, committee and subcommittee meetings.
Facilities, equipment and pro shop activities
- Ensure courts, patios, terraces, viewing areas and surrounding areas are clean, safe, well stocked and maintained to the highest standards.
- Oversee course conditions and maintenance and implement systems to monitor and communicate course playability to members.
- Coordinate maintenance and cleaning needs and advise the Chief Engineer on required equipment repairs or upgrades.
- Maintain a fully stocked pro shop with equipment and apparel for tennis, platform tennis and pickleball.
- Provide reliable, timely stringing service and stay up to date on current racquet sports equipment and apparel technologies to support members and drive sales.
Management and policy supervision
- Regularly review and update the tennis, platform tennis and pickleball manuals to ensure relevance and alignment with club standards.
- Administer and enforce, in conjunction with the Rackets Committee, club policies, procedures and regulations relating to racquet facilities, equipment and use.
